What is a drug block?

In a medical block, drugs are injected into painful areas or around nerve endings to relieve pain, reduce inflammation and relax muscles. The most common injectable drugs are anaesthetics and anti-inflammatory drugs. This technique is widely used in orthopaedics, traumatology, neurology and rheumatology.

What are the indications for a drug block?

Analgesic blockadeIndications for drug blockade Mano Klinika:

  1. Osteoarthritis (osteoarthritis) is a degenerative joint disease associated with the breakdown of cartilage and inflammation of surrounding structures.

In osteoarthritis, a blockade of drugs is effective in reducing pain, reducing inflammation and restoring joint mobility. The procedure is performed on large joints (shoulder, knee, hip, elbow).

  1. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune inflammatory disease that affects the joints, causing pain, swelling, cartilage and bone destruction.

Analgesic blockade of the knee, elbow, wrist and small hand joints reduces symptoms of inflammation and prevents further joint destruction, especially during exacerbations.

  1. Gout is a disease caused by the deposition of uric acid crystals in the joints, leading to acute painful attacks.

The blockade is prescribed for acute gouty arthritis to quickly eliminate pain and inflammation. It is usually performed on the ankle, knee and metatarsophalangeal joint (big toe joint).

  1. Post-traumatic arthritis is an inflammatory condition that occurs after joint injuries (sprains, ligament tears, fractures).

For chronic pain and swelling after trauma, drug blockade reduces inflammation and promotes tissue repair. The procedure can be performed on any injured joint.

  1. Bursitis is inflammation of the joint capsule, accompanied by pain, swelling and reduced range of motion.

A blockade of medication can quickly reduce pain and swelling.

  1. Tendinitis Tendinitis is inflammation of the tendons, accompanied by pain in the molars.

The blockade is used to reduce inflammation in the tendon and facilitate movement. It is used for the shoulder, knee, ankle and elbow joints.

Shoulder blockade reduces inflammation and relieves acute attacks of pain.

  1. Adhesive capsulitis is inflammation of the joint capsule, which severely restricts mobility of the shoulder joint.

The drug block effectively reduces inflammation, relieves pain and helps you regain movement in the shoulder joint.

How an anaesthetic block is performed

A medical joint block is a drug that is injected directly into the affected joint area. This invasive procedure helps to quickly relieve pain and reduce inflammation, providing temporary relief or a long-lasting therapeutic effect (depending on the medication used).

Stages of medial joint block "Mano Klinika":

  1. Counselling and diagnostics.
  2. Determining the indications for the blockade, selecting the right drug and dose, and determining the exact injection site.
  3. Preparation for the procedure - skin cleansing and antiseptic treatment at the needle insertion site, injection of an anaesthetic (if necessary).
  4. Injection of medicines. The injection is performed slowly to distribute the medicine evenly in the joint cavity and under ultrasound guidance, ensuring the accuracy and safety of the procedure and eliminating the risk of tissue damage.

If necessary, aspiration of fluid from the joint can be performed before drug blockade.

Depending on the purpose of the blockade, the composition of the medicine used may vary:

  • Glucocorticosteroids (GCS) - to reduce inflammation and pain.
  • Painkillers - for immediate pain relief.
  • Anti-inflammatory drugs - to reduce inflammation.
  • Chondroprotectors - to protect and repair cartilage tissue.

After the injection, the injection site is again treated with antiseptic. If necessary, a sterile dressing may be placed on the joint The doctor will give the patient recommendations on activity restrictions, monitoring of the joint after the procedure, and may prescribe medication and physiotherapy.
